09 · How Jefferson County restores sprinklers

Question 69

How does Jefferson County restore Section R309?

The commissioners amend the 2024 Jefferson County Residential Code Supplement, restoring Section R309’s residential sprinkler requirement. The county’s 2026 code update provides a practical path:

  1. Bring it to the board. Building Safety staff present the proposed amendment at a commissioners’ briefing.
  2. Share the draft for comment. The county can use the same public-comment approach it used in 2026. The Board of Review may provide an advisory recommendation.
  3. Publish notice. C.R.S. § 30-28-204 requires newspaper notice at least 14 days before the public hearing.
  4. Hold the hearing and vote. The commissioners hear testimony and adopt the amendment by resolution. Bring in the fire districts that serve unincorporated Jefferson County.
  5. Set the effective date. The resolution establishes when the restored requirement begins and how the transition will work.

The 2026 full code update went from the close of public comment to adoption in about 11 weeks. That is precedent, not a promised timetable for a new amendment. Read the full process.
